Question about McGillivray Signature Detail

[edit]

In the section describing the treaty conference, the author includes the isolated detail, "McGillivray was the only one who could sign his name." Based upon the cited resource, I do not doubt the validity of this statement, however I do believe that it potentially errs by depicting Creek Leaders as incapable of engaging in traditionally accepted treaty negotiations. This suggestion implies that this treaty and other Indigenous-Settler Treaties bear a degree of invalidity on the parts of indigenous parties (e.g. Creek Leaders). As a solution, perhaps the phrase could be replaced with "Informed of European legal customs by his Scottish father, McGillivray provided his formal signature on behalf of the Creek delegation." -- Cjguzman (talk) 18:29, 30 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
